Behind the Goal Line: Carabao Cup

Cup Nights & Cheese Pies: When Reality Bites at the Carabao Cup

Well, this was a novelty - an away day that didn’t require a mortgage for petrol! Just 40 miles up the road, no service station pitstops, and crucially, no travel sweets needed. I almost didn’t know what to do with myself without having to plan which motorway services had the cleanest loos.

**Journey Stats:**

- Miles traveled: 40 (practically a local derby!)

- Service stations: 0 (weird feeling, this)

- Travel sweets consumed: None (Odie was genuinely confused)

Carabao Cup: The Competition Nobody Admits They Care About (Until They’re Out)

Game 2 of the season and it’s Carabao Cup preliminary round time - you know, that competition where everyone pretends they’re not bothered until they get knocked out and suddenly it’s a “missed opportunity.” A few changes from Saturday’s team, but lovely to see Woods still buzzing about in midfield like he owns the place.

Donaghy got the nod between the sticks tonight, and with Daniels missing from defense, we had that classic cup rotation look about us.

When It All Goes Wrong (Very, Very Wrong)

Right, so… 36 minutes in and we’re 3-0 down. THREE. ZERO. DOWN.

I’m sitting there thinking, “Well, this escalated quickly.” One minute we’re settling into the game, the next minute I’m seriously considering whether that cheese and onion pie might be the highlight of my evening.

Then Donaghy goes and collides with his own crossbar - because apparently the opposition wasn’t challenging enough, so why not take on the goalposts too? What looked like a broken or dislocated finger later, and Hudson’s coming on. Poor lad probably thought he was getting a quiet night off.

Half-Time Hope: Cheese Pie Therapy

Off they trudge for half-time, and I’m thinking maybe some proper Northern comfort food will sort this mess out. Cheese and onion pie and a Fanta - the classic football fan cure-all, right?

Wrong. Even the pie couldn’t lift the spirits tonight. And trust me, that’s saying something because this pie was doing its absolute best.

Second Half: When Your Right-Back Becomes Your Striker

No changes from the bench to start the second half, which felt a bit like sticking with a recipe that’s already burnt the kitchen down, but what do I know?

Then something magical happened - we scored! Regan Ogle got one back, and suddenly I’m thinking, “Hang on, could our right-back be the answer to our goalscoring problems?” The lad could’ve had a hat-trick tonight! When you’re pinning all your attacking hopes on your full-back, you know it’s been one of those evenings.

The Silver Linings (Because There’s Always Something)

**Tonight’s Highlights:**

- ✅ The tunes were absolutely banging (proper lifted the mood)

- ✅ Watching someone sweep the linesman off his feet (entertainment value: priceless)

- ✅ Max the dog was there (because that faithful hound never misses a game, home or away)

- ✅ We definitely took more fans than them - 2,042 attendance and I’d bet money we sold more than 1,800 tickets

- ✅ Compact ground that actually worked well (no complaints about facilities)

The Reality Check

Look, I’m choosing to believe our hearts just weren’t in the cup tonight and we’re saving all our energy for the league. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Sometimes you have to take these nights on the chin and remember that not every away day can end with singing all the way home.

At least Odie got to see a goal, Max the dog provided his usual entertainment, and we didn’t have to navigate any roundabouts to get home.

Final Thoughts:

Cup exits happen. What matters is bouncing back on Saturday and showing that this was just one of those nights where nothing quite clicked. Plus, no 350-mile journey home means we can regroup quickly.

The league’s what matters anyway… right? Right?!

Come On You Latics! 💙

*P.S. - Regan Ogle for striker anyone? Just saying…*
