The Mellon Family Show: When Dreams Come True at Cambridge
International Break? Not in League Two!
While the big boys are off playing for their countries during the international break, we're still grinding away in League Two - and thank goodness for that! Away at Cambridge United today, and once again we're watching from the sofa while 740 magnificent Oldham fans make the journey south. You could hear them loud and proud through the TV! ๐๐ป
What a following - nearly three-quarters of a thousand people giving up their Saturday for the Latics. That's what proper support looks like.
Hudson's Century & Family Debuts
Big day for Matthew Hudson - his 100th game for Oldham Athletic! What better way to celebrate than with a clean sheet? The lad's been consistently brilliant for us, so here's hoping milestone matches bring milestone performances.
But the real story today was the Mellon family. With Quigley serving a 2-match ban for something that happened on our last away trip (apparently something offensive to the fans - these things have a habit of catching up with you), Mickey Mellon's son gets his first start!
Sometimes football writes its own perfect stories, doesn't it?
Early Promise and Mellon Magic
13 minutes in and young Mellon almost had the dream start - header hits the back of the defender, then the post! So close to the perfect fairytale beginning, but what a positive start. You could sense something special brewing.
Great to see Tom Pett back in the team as well - we've missed his experience and quality in midfield.
Then, 21 minutes in, it happened. The 21-year-old Michael Mellon with a tap-in! Finally, FINALLY, someone who can score! The build-up play was lovely, but more importantly, when the chance came, he took it.
Cue the songs: ๐ถ *There's only two Micky Mellons!* ๐ถ *Michael, Michael, Michael Mellon!* *Micky, Micky, Micky, Micky, Micky Mellon!*
You just know Mickey was trying to keep his emotions in check in the dugout, but inside he must have been bursting with pride.
Hudson's Ankle Scare
32 minutes and Hudson's down needing treatment for his ankle. Never what you want to see from your keeper, especially on his 100th appearance. The lad looked to be fouled but ended up with a yellow card just before half-time for complaining too much. Sometimes you just can't win with referees!
But half-time arrived with us 1-0 up. What a 45 minutes for the Mellon family!
Second Half: Grit and Determination
Great last-ditch defending from Hannat, clearing off the line at 54 minutes - that's the kind of commitment that wins you games away from home.
55 minutes in and our goalscorer Michael Mellon is off holding his back, with Drummond coming on. Hopefully just a precaution, but what a debut goal to remember!
Will Sutton put in a great shift before being replaced by Caprice - and how good is it to see Caprice getting proper minutes? The lad's been missed.
Cards Galore and Nearly Moments
Yellow card for Mickey Mellon on the sidelines - not sure what for, but maybe that explains why he sits so far back at Boundary Park! Even the gaffer's getting caught up in the emotion.
Caprice gets booked for kicking the ball away after losing control - one of those frustrating yellows that just happen when adrenaline's running high.
Great free kick from Conlon, curling it toward the top corner after Drummond got fouled just outside the box, but it goes out for a corner. Sometimes you need those moments of individual brilliance to seal games.
90th minute and Drummond's clean through, one-on-one with the keeper, tries to meg him but the shot gets smothered. Heart-in-mouth moment, but sometimes 1-0 is enough.
FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON!
There it is - our first win of the season! And what a way to get it, with a Mellon family story that you couldn't script if you tried.
What Worked:
- ✅ Michael Mellon's debut goal (perfect moment!)
- ✅ Hudson's milestone 100th game
- ✅ Solid defensive performance
- ✅ Tom Pett's return adding experience
- ✅ 740 away fans making their voices heard
- ✅ Finally converting chances into goals
The Bigger Picture:
This could be the turning point we've been waiting for. New striker scoring on debut, experienced players returning, clean sheet for Hudson on his century, and three points away from home.
Sometimes football gives you those perfect days where everything aligns - family stories, milestone games, first wins of the season, and proper away support all coming together.
Roll on the next one - because if this is what the Mellon family can do, bring on more of it!
Come On You Latics! ⚽️๐๐งก
*P.S. - 740 away fans at Cambridge deserves massive credit. That's what proper support looks like, and you could hear every song through the TV!*
