A Point Earned: Oldham 0-0 Crewe
Hudson Heroics Keep Us in the Game
What to say about today’s game?
First things first – the Remembrance Day reflections and the laying of the wreaths was very touching. The cadets around the ground added to the poignant atmosphere. The ground looked outstanding.
But then the football started.
Early Warning Signs
Eight minutes in and the chants of “Shit ref again, ole ole” were already ringing around Boundary Park. Crewe Alexandra were getting the flow of the game and seemingly getting every free kick decision.
Not sure how they weren’t 4 or 5 nil up at half time. Genuinely. If it wasn’t for Matthew Hudson in net, the woodwork, and their poor finishing, they would have been out of sight.
Hudson was absolutely immense. Time and time again he kept us in the game when we had no right to still be level.
Second Half Fight
Whatever Micky said to them at half time, they came out with more fight in them.
Joe Garner made a great header that, but for their keeper, would have found the back of the net. You could see Joe getting more and more frustrated as the game went on, and being on a yellow card already, no wonder Micky Mellon subbed him in the second half.
The Changes
Garner and Hannant came off, with Mike Fondop and Drummond coming on.
The chants started immediately: “Fondop again, ole ole!” and “Drummond’s on fire, your defence is petrified!”
Could this be the change we needed to get the ball in the back of the net? We desperately needed a home win.
The Final Push
At 90 minutes with 6 minutes of added time, is this the moment for Drummond to score? The fans were singing “If Drummond scores, we’re on the pitch!”
But the stewards didn’t look worried. And rightly so.
Neither team could find the win.
The Reality Check
A clean sheet for Hudson and a point from a game that could – should – have been 4 or 5 nil to them? I’ll take that, honestly.
But let’s be real: we need to improve our home form. We can’t keep inviting this much pressure at Boundary Park and expecting to get away with it. Today we rode our luck, and Hudson was superhuman, but we won’t always be so fortunate.
The Positives
Great crowd turnout – 8,937! The Boundary Park faithful turning up week in, week out.
Great to see Around the Grounds at Boundary Park today and have a quick chat with him about Oldham Athletic, but also his beloved Sheffield Wednesday. Shame we couldn’t put on a top performance for him!
Chaddy the Owl was full of mischief today, more so than ever. What’s married life done to him!
And great to see one of the POGs dads trying for the half time challenge. Good attempt, Dan!
Moving Forward
Hudson deserves massive credit for keeping us in this game. Without him, it’s a very different story. But we need to start controlling games at home and creating more chances.
The away form has been decent, but Boundary Park needs to become a fortress again.
Come on you Blues. We go again.
