Home Sweet Home: Oldham 3-0 Newport

Finally, A Boundary Park Performance!

A cold, wet, grey day for the Oldham Athletic match versus Newport County.

The visitors were bottom of the league so far, and their new manager had only been in post a few days. Would this mean they’d come to Boundary Park with nothing to lose and a point to make to their new manager? Or would this be the game that gets Boundary Park rocking? Because we desperately needed to improve our home form.

Scrappy Start

The first half was scrappy. The ref seemed to be giving them a free kick every time they fell to the floor. Frustrating to watch.

A good punch away from Hudson kept the game at 0-0, but we weren’t creating much going forward.

Half time couldn’t come quick enough. Let’s hope the team talk puts some fire underneath them for the second half.

The Changes That Changed Everything

Hannant and Garner were replaced at half time with Drummond and Fondop, and what a breath of fresh air they were! Fondop tussling with their defence, Drummond covering every inch of the pitch. This was more like it.

The Breakthrough

Eight minutes into the second half and Michael Mellon’s header was parried away by their goalkeeper – but only as far as Josh Hawkes, who found the back of the net! 1-0!

A roar went around what had been a slightly quiet Boundary Park. We had lift-off.

Finding Our Rhythm

We had the fire lit now and were passing the ball lovely. Just needed it up the right end of the pitch more often.

Drummond brought the ball up the wing and crossed it in beautifully to Joe Quigley to secure our second goal.

🎶 See him pass, see him score, having the time of his life, oh Joe Quigley, watch him play on a Saturday! 🎶

Drummond was everywhere – back defending, then breaking on attack, trying to do everything. You could feel the crowd wanted him to score, but it wasn’t looking like today was his day.

Sealing the Win

Josh Hawkes sealed the three points with his second of the game. That’s it – 3 goals, 3 points, and another clean sheet for Matthew Hudson.

Hudson Watch

Can we keep Hudson in the January transfer window? I really hope so, but there have to be clubs looking at him. His stats this season are outstanding – best in the league.

We cannot afford to lose him.

Looking Ahead

Great to be walking out of Boundary Park with the win. Our final game of the season is away to Newport – hoping for the same result then too!

Just over 7,000 there today with 222 traveling Newport fans making the trip.

The Car Park Chronicles

Parked on the NHS car park after still being stuck in the Sheepfoot Lane car park at 5:45 last week. Well, it might be the future because I was home by that time this week!

Three points, three goals, a clean sheet, and home at a decent hour. Can’t ask for much more than that.

Come on you Blues! 💙
