Mellon Magic Sends Oldham Into Round Two!
FA Cup First Round - A Day to Remember at Boundary Park
FA Cup first round game day. As I arrived at Boundary Park this afternoon, there was a double rainbow arching over the ground. Is it a good sign?
Well, it turns out it absolutely was.
A Dream Start
Three minutes in and Michael Mellon has scored an absolutely outstanding goal – a bicycle kick, overhead, into the back of the net. Boundary Park erupted. We’re bouncing!
But we weren’t done. Straight from the next attack, Mellon has found the back of the net again, chipping it over the keeper with sublime composure. 2-0 up against Northampton within 4 minutes.
Will we see a 5-minute hat trick? Because anything seemed possible today with the way the boys were playing.
Boundary Park Bouncing
🎶 Michael Michael Michael Michael Michael Mellon, Micky Micky Micky Micky Micky Mellon 🎶
The chant was ringing out around Boundary Park. And we seemed to have found a formula that’s suiting us. Not sure what it is – sun shining? 3pm kick off? Don’t care. Just love seeing this after last weekend’s frustrations.
We dominated the first half completely. Going in at halftime 2-0 up – what a feeling. This is what we’ve been waiting for.
The Hat-Trick Hero
Strong start to the second half, even though the rain had arrived. Wouldn’t be Oldham without the rain, would it?
Oli Hammond drove down the right side and squared it perfectly to Mellon, who slotted it home for his hat trick just 5 minutes into the second half. Absolutely brilliant.
Strong All Round
Strong performances from all the players today. It was a proper team display. Great to see Will Sutton back after his suspension as well – we’ve missed him.
Even the subs had an impact when they came on. At one point we were chanting “If Drummond scores, we’re on the pitch!” Fondop got the crowd going with the usual “Ole ole ole!” every time he touched the ball. And Quigley had us belting out Dancing Queen. The atmosphere was electric.
Unfortunately, a late slip-up meant Hudson’s clean sheet was taken from him, but it doesn’t matter. 3-1 win and we’re through to round two!
Let’s hope we take this performance and confidence to Harrogate next week. If we play like this, we can beat anyone.
The Little Details
It was also great to wear the blue goalkeeper kit for the first time – maybe it brought a bit of luck!
And it was nice to see Tom Conlon in the car park with his boy and a one-day-old moustache. Can’t wait to see that grow over Movember – all for a great cause. Well done Tom and the other boys joining in.
Looking Ahead
This is the Oldham we know we can be. Clinical finishing, dominant performances, and that electric Boundary Park atmosphere when we’re on it.
FA Cup second round, here we come!
Come on you Blues! 💙
