Heartbreak at The Hive: Barnet 3-2 Oldham

A Cruel Ending to the Unbeaten Run

So down to Barnet the team travelled for a 12:30 kick off. These earlier kick offs normally don’t suit us – here’s hoping today’s not the case.

Couldn’t get down there, so watching on the TV. Six games unbeaten – can this continue?

Flying Start

Off to a flying start with all the action coming from Oldham! Joe Garner passed the ball out, and a sweetly hit strike from our captain Tom Pett – we’re 1-0 up after 10 minutes! Come on!

We were dominating the play with a few chances to make it 2 or 3 nil, but just couldn’t get it in the goal.

Momentum Shifts

Then a free kick to them, and they’ve equalised with a scrappy goal. 1-1. Felt a little against the run of play.

Then another free kick to them, just inside our half. That’s kicked into the box and handled by Pett – so a penalty is awarded. No complaints from the Oldham team. 2-1 at half time.

How are we going in behind?

Even funnier, at half time you could hear off the mic some Barnet fans saying “how have we gone in up 2-1 when it was all them!” Exactly!

Second Half Scrappy

Second half and it’s scrappy. Sixty minutes in and Fondop is brought on for Pett – can this give us the edge?

The Red Card

Then we’re breaking forward. Drummond is off with the ball, just into their half, when he’s cuddled and brought down. Last man – got to be a red card!

And it was! Sixty-five minutes in and they’re down to 10 men. Could this be the way back into the game?

The Equaliser

Looks that way! Another assist from Joe Garner sets up Jack Stevens, and it’s all square – 2-2! Come on you Blues!

Questionable Sub

Eightieth minute and Drummond is subbed for Hawkes. Not sure I agree – nothing against Hawkes – but I feel Drummond was causing them problems with his speed. But what do I know? Definitely not the manager!

Two further late subs with Quigley and Taylor coming on for Garner and Stevens. Could this finish the game off?

Cruel Finish

But no. A cross that bounced off the crossbar, and they were first to the ball, smashing it into the back of the net. 3-2 finish.

Gutted.

Hats Off to the Fans

But as always, the fans that had travelled – hats off to you all, because you were loud and proud all game. Brilliant support as always.

Looking Ahead

Onwards to the next game. Let’s see if the transfer window brings in anyone.

The unbeaten run had to end sometime, but losing when you’re playing against 10 men and level at 2-2 hurts. We had chances, we dominated for long periods, but football can be cruel.

Come on you Blues. We go again. πŸ’™
