Another Away Day Disappointment: Swindon 3-0 Oldham

Early Kick Off, Same Old Story

Oldham at Swindon away today – 12:31 kick off. The early starts don’t normally suit us, but let’s see. Two of the new signings are in the starting 11, with a start for Fondop. Let’s see what we can do.

Can’t get there today, so watching on TV – and can hear the Oldham fans loud and clear! 👏

The Weather Gods Have a Laugh

Sunshine and torrential rain, all in the same game at the same time. Going to be a wet one for sure.

First Half Struggles

They’re dominating the first half with possession, but we’re holding them off.

Twenty-three minutes in and a goal for a debutant – but unfortunately it’s for Swindon, not us. Felt very much against the run of play, but they cut through us on the right between Caprice and Daniels.

Feels like we’re missing Will Sutton in defence. Unsure why he was let go.

We just can’t seem to get it through midfield, and I’m not sure about the 5-4-1 system. We go in at half time 1-0 down.

Second Half Changes

Second half starts with no changes for us until the 53rd minute, when new boy Taylor – who to be fair had a good half – is subbed for Drummond. Let’s see if he can run at them and cause some damage, because the long balls up for Fondop just aren’t working.

Two Becomes Three

Again, we’re caught messing around in our own half and they come through. 2-0.

Instant reaction from Micky Mellon – he brings on Stevens for Simeu, who for me has been caught out of position too many times today. Along with Daniels, who’s had the worst game I’ve seen from him, I’m not surprised we’re 2-0 down.

Penalty Miss

Eighty minutes gone and Fondop is brought down – penalty awarded. Not sure myself, felt a little soft, but hey, we’ll take it.

Kavanagh places the ball on the spot. Will he get his debut goal and kick-start a comeback for Oldham?

He goes down the middle, no real power, and Ripley saves it with his legs. It’s just not meant to be today.

Late Pressure, No Reward

Stevens is causing them all sorts of trouble on the left wing and wins a couple of free kicks, but nothing can be converted from them.

Ripley again saves them with a triple save – first from an effort from Drummond, followed up by Robson, and then a final shot from Fondop, but he holds onto that ball.

It just isn’t going to go for us.

The Final Blow

Final minutes of the game and they break forward again, crossed in with an easy tap-in to make it 3-0.

Hats Off to the Fans

Well done to the 500-ish fans that travelled and sang their hearts out all game. You deserved better than that performance.

Every Minute Matters

The 12:31 kick off, along with every EFL game today, was to support the British Heart Foundation’s campaign “Every Minute Matters” – highlighting the importance of speed when it comes to performing life-saving CPR. An important message.

Looking Ahead

Next game is Fleetwood at home. They have James Norwood and a new manager. Let’s hope we can keep them out of our net and get some points on the board.

We need to sort out the defensive issues, find a system that works, and show more composure in possession. Can’t keep giving goals away like this.

Come on you Blues. We need a reaction at Boundary Park.
